Technology
Airlines of all sizes as well as aviation manufacturers are looking carefully at all avenues for reducing carbon emissions. Research into efficiency improvements and electric taxiing as well as implementing better air traffic management, for example, should be welcomed and encouraged.
It is important to recognise, however, that propulsion is the key area where innovation is required to truly enable low-carbon and even zero-emission flights.
There are different emissions-reducing propulsion technologies:
Operations
As for operational improvements, a substantial amount of fuel is wasted due to inefficient routing. Better flight routing could reduce inefficient aviation operations growth and cut consumption by 10% according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). Whereas, according to EUROCONTROL’s Performance Review Report, the measures could lead to a 6% emission reduction in Europe.
Overview
On 11 February 2021, Europe’s aviation sector unveiled its flagship sustainability initiative, Destination 2050 – a route to net zero European aviation, which provides a vision and path for meaningful CO2 emission reduction efforts in Europe and globally.
ERA working plan for 2023
ERA has recently developed a working plan for 2023, outlining our work priorities and main policy asks for the coming months. The programme is structured around four topics, reflecting ERA’s mission: boosting regional connectivity, ensuring the competitiveness of European regional aviation, campaigning for improvements in air safety, operational efficiency & ATM modernisation and championing environmental & social responsibilities.
1. Boosting regional connectivity
ERA attends Making Skills Count conference
ERA recently attended the Making Skills Count Conference organised by DG EMPL in Brussels, gathering stakeholders, policymakers and experts for stimulating discussions and initiatives on skills-related challenges. The conference is part of the European Year of Skills 2023, with the aim of promoting re-skilling and upskilling, matching skills with digitalisation and green transition, and reconciling people’s aspirations with the needs of the market.

ERA Board meets with Magda Kopczyńska DG MOVE
On 27 March 2024 the ERA team and members of the Board met with DG MOVE’s Director-General Magda Kopczyńska, to highlight the importance of our sector in regional development and connectivity and to ensure that policymakers understand and take into account the unique business models our members operate, transporting both passengers and cargo.
A brief summary of the meeting is available for members only to download from the top of this page. For further information please contact policy.technical@eraa.org.
Industry Affairs
The Industry Affairs Group is an exciting and informative group providing a unique learning environment about aeropolitical, environmental and industry affairs issues affecting our industry. Meeting regularly throughout the year, on average three times per year, the decisions made by this group, by you the members, allow the ERA team to effectively influence European policy institutions, with proven positive results.
Operations, Safety and Infrastructure
ERA's operations, safety and infrastructure domain hold regular meetings with members to share best practices, experiences, debate and agree positions on upcoming regulatory policy as well as providing a platform for detailed discussion on upcoming technical enablers and initiatives. The Air Safety and Operations Groups hold face to face meetings twice a year. Whilst separate forums in the their own right, they run in conjunction with each other to allow for maximum participation, and to enable deeper discussion where topics overlap.
