EU election results
11 June 2024: The EU election results shows that the overall division of seats in the European Parliament remains largely unchanged. The centre-right European People’s Party (EPP) remains the biggest political family and has even increased seats, the centre-left Socialists & Democrats (S&D) comfortably remain second largest and the liberals also kept third place.
According to the latest provisional results, the composition of the Parliament for the mandate 2024-2029 would be the following (in numerical order of seats):
- EPP - Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) – 186 seats
- S&D - Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament – 135 seats
- Renew Europe - Renew Europe Group – 79 seats
- ECR - European Conservatives and Reformists Group – 73 seats
- ID - Identity and Democracy Group – 58 seats
- Others - Newly elected Members not allied to any of the political groups set up in the outgoing Parliament – 55 seats
- Greens/EFA - Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance – 53 seats
- NI - Non-attached Members – 45 seats
- The Left - The Left group in the European Parliament - GUE/NGL – 36 seats
Voters across Europe have shown a preference for parties on the right of the political spectrum, while Socialists, Greens, Liberals and the far-left have overall lost seats. The biggest losses for the Greens came from the delegations representing France and Germany, which accounted for half of the movement's strength in the Parliament.
From its position of power, the EPP is best placed to set EU policy, tilting the agenda to the right. While the EPP could once again join a grand coalition with the socialists and liberals, it could also negotiate a working relationship on some issues with parties further to the right.
