Binter reduces the consumption of plastic on board
Binter has taken another step in its sustainability policy by reducing the use of plastic elements in its on-board service, incorporating ecological consumables. The airline will stop using around three million plastic cups per year by replacing them with 100 per cent compostable cardboard containers. It also incorporates the use of recycled paper napkins with the Ecolabel certificate (sustainable European criteria), wooden spreaders and menu boxes using biodegradable cardboard. These developments, visible to passengers since 30 April, will prevent the consumption of more than 9 tons of plastic per year on board, as well as other benefits.
It is an important step for the Canarian company, with which it tries to improve the experience on board for its passengers and transfer their commitment to the environment, maintaining the quality of the service, which includes a free snack on inter-island flights and a courtesy menu on national and international flights.
The initiative is part of the set of special actions that Binter will launch on the 30th of each month during the year 2019, as part of the celebration of its 30th anniversary, on 26 March.
The airline also undertakes to use materials that are less harmful to the environment in its external promotional stands, and in its post office.
The measures launched on 30 April add to others that have already been in place for years to help preserve the environment, such as the continuous renewal of the fleet with new aircraft models from manufacturers ATR and Embraer which are more respectful to the planet , and the promotion of Binter's mobile app, which allows a significant saving of paper.
In addition, through the ecological fleet project, Atlántica de Handling has invested more than €3m euros since 2008 in the renewal of the fleet and ground assistance equipment, to have the highest percentage of electrical and efficient appliances. In this way, the deadline, set by Aena for 2020, has been advanced so that companies in the sector reduce pollutant emissions by 20 per cent, thus positioning themselves as the handling company most committed to the environment in the national territory.
