Let’s meet again
As this autumn edition of Regional International takes us into the final quarter of 2021, it’s a good time to reflect on the last 18 months and how all our lives and businesses have changed. The summer season has provided some relief to travel and tourism in Europe. Recent data from EUROCONTROL showed us that traffic across the network in August reached 71 per cent of 2019 levels, approximately 25,500 flights per day, and peaking to 26,773 flights on 27 August. Traffic is now slightly slowing down owing to the end of the holiday period with 23,574 flights (67 per cent of 2019 levels) on 15 September, a slight decrease over two weeks (-4 per cent); whilst traffic for the first two weeks of September was at 71 per cent of 2019 levels.

I am delighted to announce that registration for our Membership Conference, scheduled for the end of the year in London, is now open to representatives from all member companies. This event, which replaces our postponed General Assembly, is an opportunity for our members to reunite and meet face to face to gather and reassess the new scenario after the crisis. The event will also include the association’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) together with three conference sessions focussed on industry recovery and sustainability challenges. I very much look forward to meeting as many of you at the event as possible at this, our first physical conference, for some time. Regular updates and information will be provided via our usual media channels and on our website. To register your participation today, please click here .
Sustainable Regional Aviation Forum
This month I was honoured to be part of the Sustainable Regional Aviation Forum in Gran Canaria, hosted by ERA member Binter and co-organised by ERA with Spain’s Aviation Safety and Security Agency (AESA) and SENASA, a state trading company providing specialised technical assistance to public entities of the Spanish aeronautical sector.
The event featured conference sessions and expert insight from key industry figures to discuss aviation’s green transition and sustainability solutions. The event was underpinned by a presentation from myself and ERA’s Sustainability Manager Martina Di Palma on ERA’s joint flagship sustainability initiative, Destination 2050. This highlighted the decisive joint actions needed to make net zero European aviation a reality by 2050, through a combination of four key measures working together – industry and institutions – at national, European and global levels. This included a regulatory update on developments to support the green transition of aviation provided by Flor Diaz Pulido, Head of Unit of Aviation Policy in DG MOVE, and an informative brief delivered by Jose Doramas Jorge Calderon, the leading economist from the European Investment Bank (EIB).
As well as this, Marta Lestau director of Aviation Safety from AESA provided an overview of the challenges for the entire supply chain, whilst leading industry manufacturers ATR, Airbus, Embraer and Zeroavia, outlined the technological advancements that will help industry reach its decarbonisation targets. Presentations were also provided by The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Universidad de La Laguna, BP, AENA and Credit Suisse.
Whilst recovery jumped to the top of the agenda 18 months ago, sustainability has remained a key priority. Our industry takes its responsibility seriously and we continue to work to minimise its impact on the environment as much as possible. This forum was an excellent example of the sector coming together to align itself in order to achieve net zero European aviation – even during difficult times. To read the full report about the forum, please visit page 15.
ERA Group meetings and webinars
During the next few months, ERA will host its regular group meetings together with some focussed webinars on key industry subjects, all available for ERA member representatives to attend.
Our Environmental and Social Group and our Industry Affairs Group meetings will take place on 18–19 October in the ERA office at EUROCONTROL in Brussels, and a number of operational webinars are planned, including on flight efficiency (15 October) and European Plan for Aviation Safety (EPAS) (27 October). For further details on all these meetings, and information on how to register, please visit our website here . I fully encourage and welcome, you the members, to participate and be involved in all these events.
We are #StrongerTogether and we are #ReconnectingEurope.
